Businessman acquitted of drug possession charge

JOHOR BARU: A 37-year-old businessman was acquitted of a drug possession charge after a High Court here ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against him.
P. Kiran Kumar was acquitted on Monday (March 1) after the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to provide credible evidence on the charge against him as well as contradictory statements made by the witnesses.
According to the charge sheet, Kiran was in possession of 34.9gm of methamphetamine at a supermarket in Seri Alam at about 7.10pm on July 1,2018.
The act is an offence under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which carries a jail term of up to five years and 10 strokes of the cane. ....

Driver told to enter defence

Judicial commissioner Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman made the order after allowing the prosecution’s appeal yesterday.
She ruled that the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against Sam Ke Ting.
Members of the media and family members of the deceased were barred from entering the courtroom.
Sam, 26, was charged with driving recklessly and dangerously, which resulted in the death of eight cyclists, under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a jail term of not more than 10 years and a fine not exceeding RM20,000, upon conviction.
Exactly four years ago, on Feb 18,2017, the eight teen cyclists were killed while another eight were injured when a car driven by the accused ploughed into the group. ....

JOHOR BARU, Feb 18 The families of the teenagers who died in an accident four years ago expressed their gratitude for the latest developments in the case today.
Earlier, the High Court here ordered a sales promoter who was involved in the accident that killed eight teenage cyclists to enter her defence.
Judge Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman made the decision after finding that the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against Sam Ke Ting, 26, and overturned the decision made by the Magistrate’s Court to acquit and discharge her in October 2019. ....

Bus driver sent to the gallows for girlfriend's murder

JOHOR BARU (Bernama): The Johor Bahru High Court has sentenced a bus driver to death by hanging after he was found guilty of killing his girlfriend, who was a cleaner at the Changi International Airport, at Taman Scientex, near Pasir Gudang here five years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman handed down the sentence on M. Siva Sangker, 37, Thursday (Feb 4) after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts at the end of the defence case.
In the judgment, Dr Shahnaz said the argument by the defence that the accused was not at the murder scene, but was in Masai, when the murder took place, and his denial of having a motive to kill the victim because he and the victim were good friends, were mere denial and an afterthought . ....
