Covid-19: The mystery of rising infections in India s Kerala Published image captionKerala has recorded more than 3.4 million Covid-19 cases The southern Indian state of Kerala accounts for more than half of the country s new Covid-19 infections. The BBC s Soutik Biswas and Vikas Pandey report on why cases continue to rise in the state, months after the waning of the deadly second wave. In January 2020, Kerala reported India s first Covid-19 case in a medical student who returned from Wuhan, in China, where the pandemic began. The number of cases rose steadily and it became a hotspot. By March, however, half a dozen states were reporting more cases than the picturesque southern state. ....

Health Desk | | Published 15.05.21, 11:16 AM Scientists are studying what led to the unexpected surge in India, which is now recording one of the sharpest spikes in coronavirus infections globally. It is now known that the virus seems to have been mutating around the new year. As per evidence, virologists believe it is now more transmissible and able to evade pre-existing immunity. Shaheed Jameel, who chairs the Scientific Advisory Group for the Indian SARS-CoV2 Consortium on Genomics, says there are two variants that are fuelling the current second wave of infections across the country. These are the B.1.617 and the B.1.1.7 as per data available with the consortium, which was set up by the Indian government in January as a grouping of national laboratories that use genetic sequencing to track the emergence and circulation of viral variants. ....
Double and triple mutants of COVID-19 are same; vaccines effective on it: Scientist There is apprehension among experts that the new variant could also increase infection rates and easily surpass immune defences. By PTI| Posted by Nikita Venkatesh | Updated: 23rd April 2021 6:34 pm IST New Delhi: The double and triple mutant strains detected in India are one and the same variant of the coronavirus, and the available vaccines are effective on it, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics Director Soumitra Das said on Friday. Speaking at a webinar on ‘Genome Sequencing of SARS-CoV-19’, Das said double mutant and triple mutant terms are “colloquial” and both refer to the same variant B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus. ....
Double and triple mutants of coronavirus one and the same; vaccines effective on it: Scientist SECTIONS Last Updated: Apr 23, 2021, 06:02 PM IST Share Synopsis These variants harbour 15 lineage defining mutations. B.1.617, initially termed double mutant, has three new spike protein mutations. Two mutations E484Q and L452R are in the area important for antibody-based neutralisation.
