At what point of time in your career did you realize that you had evolved into a book/print historian from a professor of English literature? How did the evolution happen?

A few days ago, driving back from Berkeley to San Francisco, I got held up for a while in a jam across the Bay Bridge. The cause of the jam was a mobile procession brought out by the Sikh community, bearing messages in support of Indian farmers and critical of Narendra Modi and the Indian government. The protesters were likely drawn from the Sikh diaspora, whose story is intertwined with that of California’s rich agricultural history, and who probably still have family in India whowork as farmers. Similar protests have taken place in the United Kingdom and Canada, countries with sizeable Sikh minority populations. ....

The label ‘populism’ has acquired unprecedented currency lately and is used to indiscriminately describe such a wide range of political figures and political tendencies that it seems to have lost all conceptual meaning. In the best of times, it was always a slippery concept that has been linked to democracy at one end and fascism at the other. On the one hand, it is seen as the democratic ‘excess’ that escapes the attempt of liberal-representative institutions to rein it in; on the other, it is seen as being of a piece with the fascist resort to antipolitical demagoguery and the rhetoric of the (national) ‘underdog’ oppressed by an elite (usually with international links). ....
