There s no wildfire in Knoxville and the surrounding counties, despite the smoke hovering over the region. Smoke that was reported by residents of Anderson, Blount, Knox and Loudon counties is from controlled burns in Oak Ridge, Knox County emergency dispatchers confirmed on Tuesday morning. The smoke was strong enough to require air quality warnings for sensitive groups.

Knoxville Biz Ticker: Demolition of former Radioisotope Development Lab underway at Oak Ridge The Knoxville News-Sentinel 2/25/2021 Knoxville News Sentinel Demolition of former Radioisotope Development Lab underway at Oak Ridge OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – DOE’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) and contractor UCOR have begun removing the two remaining structures at the former Radioisotope Development Lab at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). “This project launches our next phase of major demolition and cleanup at ORNL,” said Nathan Felosi, OREM’s portfolio federal project director for ORNL. “Our work is eliminating contaminated structures, like this one, that are on DOE’s list of high-risk facilities and clearing space for future research missions.”

Whatever it is, it always whets my taste buds to explore more of the park and spread out a bit. When I took this hike, the trails in the High Peaks region were a little worse for wear with mud and the occasional reminder of early winter, but the southern Adirondacks were in perfect fall mode. I still wasn’t too sure what I was going to explore even as I parked the car. I wanted to see what the trails looked like before I made any decisions. So, without much more than a blind finger point to an open map, I decided to hike back to Heart Pond and bushwhack to the summit of Sharps Ridge and then down to Peshette Swamp. By the time I wiped the cobwebs from my eyes, ate some oatmeal, made a coffee and brushed my teeth, it was 10 a.m. and I was burning daylight. The nice thing is my central l
