Stable formula funding, research highlight UH's legislative agenda

The University has named seven priorities for funding in its
agenda for the 87th Texas Legislative session, which started Jan. 12.
The agenda requests the maintenance of existing funding levels, restoration of reductions instituted during the summer of 2020 and provisions of financial support for research projects as well as infrastructure.
UH is asking the legislature to provide formula funding that remains consistent with the rate of $55.85 per semester credit hour allocated for the 2020-21 biennium, explaining that “formula funding is the most important factor in making a college education affordable to Texans.” ....

White and Latino Plaintiffs Stall Oregon COVID Relief Fund Specifically Addressing Needs of Black Families and Businesses, Calling It Discriminatory
Citing a number of historical disparities that have decimated the Black community for centuries, Oregon lawmakers last year took steps in trying to ease the burden on African-Americans impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Legislators carved out $62 million in aid for Black families and business owners from the state’s $1.6 billion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act package.
But a pair of federal lawsuits filed last year in the U.S. District Court of Oregon successfully sought injunctions to stop those grant dollars from reaching their intended targets, calling the relief fund unconstitutional and biased. ....

Spring 2021: Looking ahead to a new semester
The spring semester will look different than a typical in-person semester, with the University continuing primarily remote operations. Here are some of the top stories to look out for in Spring 2021:
Campus
The University is currently operating under the
Plan B reopening procedures for Spring 2021. The plan limits the number of courses and personnel on campus. UH will offer 18 percent of all courses for the upcoming semester with a face-to-face option. This includes in-person and hybrid classes.

Partnered with COVID-19 testing company
Curative, the University will offer a free, walk-up kiosk on campus where UH community members can receive a PCR saliva swab test with the presentation of their Cougar Card, regardless of whether they have symptoms. ....
