Malaysian economy to recover in 2021 on effective vaccine deployment, says world bank


KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s economy is expected to return to positive growth this year, along with other economies globally on the sustained progress in the vaccine rollouts that will boost consumption worldwide, the World Bank Group said.
Its Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment Global Practice lead economist, Richard Record said the group expects the vaccine deployment can be mostly completed in 2021 in most economies, leading to strong recovery and demand, as well as boosting trade and commodity prices.
We are projecting a global growth of 4.0 per cent this year. As for Malaysia, we project economic growth this year to range between 5.6 and 6.7 per cent,” he said during the virtual 2021 Malaysia’s Economic and Strategic Outlook Forum (MESOF) titled: The Post-COVID-19 New Normal - Where Do We Go From Here” on Monday. ....

PETALING JAYA: More oil palm plantation companies are venturing into agriculture-related businesses, from dairy farming to pineapple and coconut cultivation, on a large-scale basis in their efforts to further diversify income streams.

Big LNG boost for Malaysia


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and its national oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) are expected to benefit from the recent spike in the price of gas.
The Asian liquefied natural gas (LNG) spot price has been rallying over the past two months and soared more than 18 times to a record high of US$32.50 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) from the April 2020 low of US$2.40 due to the unusually cold winter in North Asia and Europe, as well as unexpected supply issues.
Asian LNG spot prices have outpaced that of Europe and the United States.
According to a report by Reuters, US gas futures for February at the Henry Hub benchmark currently trade at around US$2.60 per mmBtu, while in Europe, prices at the Dutch TTF hub are around US$10 per mmBtu. ....

Ringgit higher for 3rd straight day as US$ drifts


KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar for the third consecutive day, taking advantage of the drifting greenback and the oil market rally. At 9 am, the ringgit improved to 4.0400/0460 versus the US dollar from 4.0430/0470 at Wednesday s close. Axi chief global market strategist Stephen Innes said that the local note could consolidate around the current level today as the Group of Ten (G-10) traders debate the US dollar s near-term direction. The G-10 comprises 11 industrial countries Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States which consult and co-operate on economic, monetary and financial matters.
