A DOMESTIC abuse survivor, anti knife crime charity and a cafe which gives refugees and asylum seekers a chance have all been nominated for National Diversity Award. Shana Begum, The Daniel Fox Foundation and Cafe Laziz are making St Helens proud after all three were nominated for National Diversity Awards in different categories, for the work they do helping others in the community. The National Diversity Awards celebrate role models, entrepreneurs and community organisations. Shana Begum is up for a Positive Role Model Award for her work raising awareness of domestic abuse and helping survivors after she fled to St Helens from a nearby town with her three children after leaving an honour based abusive relationship. ....

Hair and beauty professionals have a unique opportunity to support their clients with a range of issues including domestic abuse, as regular customers often feel more comfortable sharing aspects of their lives with them, rather than friends or family. It’s an important avenue to explore, as in the UK as many as one in four women and one in six men have experienced domestic abuse, while three women are murdered each week and three take their own lives. ....
