New Jersey Devils End Season with a Whimper of a 2-4 Loss at Philadelphia

Tonight was the final game of the 2021 season for the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers. Outside of odds for the 2021 NHL Draft Lottery, this game had no real meaning beyond it being the 56th and final game of the season for both. To a player, this was a game where they could make one last good impression for their next contract. But the game was otherwise an obligation. Yet, the Devils managed to do what they have done throughout most of the season and disappoint the fans who paid attention to it anyway. The Devils lost their last game of the season 2-4. As usual, it is not so much that they lost that is the issue, but how it happened. ....

First Period
In a not-so-great start to the game, Miles Wood chases Charlie McAvoy on the forecheck just 15 seconds into the period, gets tangled up on the turn, and hits the ice clutching his leg. He does return to the ice for his next shift though fortunately, in a game where his presence is looking more important than ever. The name of tonight’s gameplay is FAST, and not showing signs of slowing any time soon, so Wood’s talents would be sorely missed if he was seriously injured.
Though speed is supposed to be our young team’s best trick, Boston is beating us at our own game so far this period. There’s a lot of back and forth, but the Devils aren’t able to set up much in the offensive zone when they get there, whereas the Bruins are at least getting a shot or two off on each entry. They’re also collecting all the rebounds our rebounds (which haven’t hit the net yet), their rebounds, my ....

No Pity for the Enemy: New Jersey Devils Put Down Philadelphia Flyers

Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images
I hated what happened during The Week of Hate. I was concerned that the New Jersey Devils would flop again in a four-game week against the Second Rate Rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. Given the state of the Devils’ season and the state of the Flyers’ season plus the Flyers since 1976, I dubbed this past week The Week of Pity. Four games against two teams with nothing much to play for beyond contracts, pride, and bragging rights. Tonight was the end of The Week of Pity and it ended with a pleasing 4-1 win for the New Jersey Devils. How the Devils got the win demonstrated something I always enjoy seeing against a rival: a team showing no pity for their opposition. ....

New Jersey Devils Goaltenders, Scorers Paltry in 5-1 Loss to Pittsburgh Penguins

First Period
Zacha, Hischier, and Bastian started for the New Jersey Devils, and they iced the puck 14 seconds into the game. After the faceoff, Aaron Dell misplayed a puck and had to make a tight save. The Devils were unable to regain the puck, and Sidney Crosby ripped a puck from faceoff dot off of Dell’s shoulder and in to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 1-0 lead. That was not a good goal to let in. Right after the next faceoff, Cody Ceci hit a shot off the post.
After Kasperi Kapanen missed the net on an odd-man rush, Nico Hischier set Nathan Bastian up in front of Tristan Jarry. Bastian rang a shot off the crossbar and out. A couple minutes later, the Boqvist line forced the Penguins to take an icing. Nico Hischier took the puck away behind Jarry, but his attempt to move the puck to Zacha was taken away. They got back into the offensive zone, and Zacha took a shot on the rush that went wide. ....

Wow, what a game.
If you had told me after the second period that the Devils would end up only losing by one, I would have laughed at your face while simultaneously fighting back the urge to scream at a wall.
After a horrible - and I mean HORRIBLE - first two periods, the Devils somehow were able to put up a six spot in the third period, to make an embarrassing game much more respectable while simultaneously showing the promise that the kids have.
Even with this loss, I can’t help but smile at the fact that this team full of forwards not even over 26 years old were oh-so-close to coming back against a strong Penguins team, again showing why Devils fans have a lot to look forward to in the future. ....
