I feel it s a change for people of color for women, said one Wake County mom. That this land, regardless of skin color, was made for you and me. It s crazy! It totally is. The HBCU community is so small, but also having a big impact in this world, said Shaw first-year student Robert Sheppard. So being inside her shoes, well, where she used to be, is awesome. The newly-minted vice-president didn t attend Shaw but when she made a campaign swing through the Triangle last fall she made sure to put Shaw University on the itinerary. She talked to ABC11 during the visit as she stumped for votes. ....
OXFORD â Charissa Puryear has been named the new county extension director for Granville County. A Granville County resident since 2003, Puryear follows Paul Westfall as head of N.C. Cooperative Extensionâs operation in Granville County. Westfall, who was also the countyâs livestock agent since 2008, retired recently. Puryear has been the youth programs coordinator for Granville County Extension for about the past 16 years. Now that sheâs stepping up, âIâm really excited to be in this role because I want people to see extension as a solution-based organization that we want to be because weâre trying to bring that research knowledge or research-based knowledge fromâ N.C. State University and N.C. A&T State University, she said. ....

(WECT) - A local man started following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1950s and carried on his legacy after his assassination by pushing for a national holiday in his honor. “I was a student at Shaw University in Raleigh and Dr. Martin Luther King taught a lot of his early workshops training for non-violence for participants,” said Reverend Aaron Johnson. “I had the privilege of attending some of those workshops.” ....
Saint Augustine s University campus Historically Black colleges and universities received much-needed debt relief from the federal government as part of the recent COVID-19 relief bill, a change leaders say allows them more financial freedom to invest in their futures. Congress passed a behemoth spending bill last month that included a variety of COVID-19 relief measures and earmarked $20.2 billion for colleges and universities. Also buried in the omnibus spending package is $1.3 billion in loan forgiveness for HBCUs that borrowed money through the federal government s HBCU Capital Financing Program. The program was established in the 1990s to provide access to low-rate capital that would allow HBCUs to refinance existing debt, make infrastructure repairs and renovations, and work on new construction. ....
