Maryland bill would give students mental health days off

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) A bill in the Maryland state Legislature would grant school students excused absences for mental health reasons.
Under the proposed law, students would be allowed to skip school once every quarter without needing a doctor’s note.
Sponsored by Del. Alonzo Washington D-Prince George’s, the legislation aims to alleviate mental health problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Right now, we know mental health and mental illness is running rampant, especially among students,” Washington told Capital News Service.
Washington voiced concerns regarding the general mental health of students across Maryland. ....

More than 10 months into the pandemic, mental health is a simmering crisis for many of the nation s schoolchildren, partly hidden by isolation but increasingly evident in the distress of parents, the worries of counselors and an early body of research.
Holed up at home, students dwell in the glare of computer screens, missing friends and teachers. Some are failing classes. Some are depressed. Some are part of families reeling with lost jobs, gaps in child care or bills that can t be paid. ....

The high school freshman had struggled with some anxiety before schools shut down abruptly in March, but in the isolation of the pandemic, cut off from daily interaction with friends and teachers at McCallum High School in Austin, the feelings snowballed.
“I feel stuck in this sort of in between age where I’m old enough to see current events that I’m able to understand their impact and have opinions on them, but I’m unable to really do anything about it,” she said. “It’s a very discouraging feeling and it leaves me feeling pretty hopeless about the future, both my own and that of the world.” ....
