VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – More than 100 people participated in the CROP WALK for HUNGER in spite of the rain that greeted them at the beginning of the walk on Wednesday, May 5th. This was the 41st CROP WALK held in Valley City with the goal of raising $5,000 for hunger and development projects across the world with 20% going to the Barnes County Food Pantry. Event coordinator Sharon Buhr said hunger is on the rise, with 690 million people across the world (9% of the world’s population) going to bed on an empty stomach each night. In the USA the average grocery bill for a family of 4 is about $240 a week, whereas half of the world’s population is trying to survive on less than $18 a week. One way that CROP Hunger walkers help end hunger is by raising funds to help provide seeds and tools for farmers worldwide so families can grow their own food. ....
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Parks and Rec will be planting a number of trees at 9am in City Park. The community is invited to attend and celebrate the joy and benefits of trees. One tree, an Autumn Splendor Buckeye, was donated by Jeff Moe, to remember his uncle, a long time resident, Lloyd Miller. Lloyd was very active member of the town, being involved in numerous organizations and on the Valley City Public School Board for 12 years. Valley City has been recognized as a Tree City USA for a number of years. The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America. The communities that achieve this status meet four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day. ....

(NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City-Barnes County CROP WALK for HUNGER is set for Wednesday, May 5 with registration anytime between 6:30 and 7 pm. “The CROP WALK will be a little different this year,” states co-chair, Pastor Emmy Swedlund. “We’ll be walking the “Jefferson Mile”, the mile route around Jefferson Elementary School and the Hi-Liner Athletic Fields area, and there will be 4 education stations, one station at each of the corners,” continues Swedlund. Walkers can register at any of the 4 corners of the Jefferson mile between 6:30 pm and 7 pm, then walk clockwise around the mile path, and do it one, two, three or even times before the event closes at 8 pm. “We walk because they (those in Asia and Africa) walk”, notes Sharon Buhr the other Walk co-chair. “We walk to raise funds to help them, but they walk because they have to walk to get water, or buy items, or go to school, “ continues Buhr. ....
