The RM2.25 billion which the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has set aside for highway operators so that they won t increase toll charges this year should instead be spent on the B20 community which is struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic, said PSM central committee member Sharan Raj.
The RM2.25 billion can be used to provide RM900 a month of Modified Universal Basic Income (MUBI) for at least a year to about 200,000 B20 household to alleviate their financial distress, he said in a statement today. ....

“For now, we have managed to stop Lynas from dumping its toxic radioactive waste in Kuantan’s water catchment. However, for as long as the radioactive waste remains in Malaysia, we cannot let our guard down,” she said.
“The DOE website clearly states that Lynas EIA for the permanent waste dump proposal for Bukit Ketam has been rejected and now Lynas is spinning a new story, I guess to prevent its stock value from crashing.
“Under Lynas’ licence condition from 2018, the government should stop its operation to stop more toxic radioactive waste from being piled up further. However, it might be wishful thinking albeit a public and environmental health blessing if the government actually enforces the law on Lynas.” ....

The planned rare earth element mining in Jelai forest in Pahang will destroy the Orang Asli community and environment, Parti Socialis Malaysia s (PSM) environment bureau national coordinator Sharan Raj (
above) said today.
Malaysiakini reported yesterday that plans are afoot to mine rare earth from the Jelai forest in Pahang with the proposed project covering an area that can fit in 924 football fields.
At present, the project - which spans 660 hectares - has not yet been approved.

Groups laud decision to maintain power tariffs


PETALING JAYA: Business groups and consumers are thankful that electricity tariffs are being kept at 39.45 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh), saying that it will lighten their burden as the nation continues to cope with challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
SME Association of Malaysia president Datuk Michael Kang said the decision would help small and medium enterprises get back on their feet after struggling to keep businesses afloat throughout the year.
“It would definitely be a big help for SMEs to rebuild their business after a tough year, ” he said.
The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) also welcomed the decision saying it would be beneficial for households especially those in the lower income categories. ....
