Raj Kapoor And Majrooh Sultanpuri: a Matter of Mutual Respect

MUMBAIÂ âÂ In the related story on Raj Kapoor and Nargis earlier, we had mentioned that Majrooh Sultanpuri, as a struggling lyricist then, was a trusted friend to her mother, Jaddanbai. Jaddanbai would escort Nargis to all her shoots and when she could not go one day, she requested the writer to accompany her.
The film being made was âAagâ (1948), Raj Kapoorâs debut as a producer and director.
Striking up a conversation with the poet-lyricist on sets, Kapoor whimsically asked him to pen a song for him as well, and Majrooh rose to the occasion and soon, the song âRaat Ko Ji Haaye Chamke Taareâ was recorded for the film by composer Ram Ganguly in the voices of Mukesh and Shamshad Begum. Stating that he had written this song informally, Majrooh did not accept any remuneration for the song. ....

The Gupkar alliance on Thursday surpassed the tally of the BJP in the election for the top positions of the District Development Councils (DDC) by winning two more districts in the Jammu region.
An official said the National Conference (NC), whose president Farooq Abdullah is leading the alliance, has won the chairperson posts in Kishtwar and Ramban districts.
“NC candidate Puja Devi bagged eight votes [out of 14] in Kishtwar. In Ramban, NC candidate Shamshad Begum got 11 votes,” an NC spokesman said. ....

KNO, NC candidate Puja Devi in Kishtwar bagged eight votes and won the election for Chairman while Congress candidate Saima Lone was elected as Vice Chairman.
In Ramban, NC candidate Shamshad Begum got eleven votes and registered a thumping win while Rabiya Beigh, an independent candidate emerged victorious for the post of Vice-Chairman.
Pertinently, three independent DDC members from Ramban including former bureaucrat Bashir Rounyal joined NC yesterday and extended support to the party candidate today. ....
