The bill, HB 1083, would require the Department of Labor to stop charging Missourians who were overpaid unemployment benefits during the pandemic. The bill had already passed the House and was well on its way to passing with bipartisan support in the Senate on Monday evening. Then Sen. Mike Bernskoetter, R-Jefferson City, amended the bill to include a provision that would permanently shorten the length of time Missouri residents are eligible to receive unemployment benefits. Under the provision, Missouri would offer a shorter eligibility window between 12 and 20 weeks depending on the health of the economy than any other state in the nation. ....

JEFFERSON CITY â 175 years ago, Dred Scott and his wife Harriet first sought to be freed from slavery at the landmark Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis. Their case went on for 11 years. While the St. Louis court initially sided with the Scotts, on appeal, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled against them, denying freedom for them and their daughters. The U.S. Supreme Court later upheld the Missouri courtâs decision. Now, nearly two centuries later, the Missouri legislature has formally declared that the decision was wrong. House concurrent resolutions 4 and 5, sponsored by Rep. Raychel Proudie, D-Ferguson, gained approval in the Senate on Thursday. It had unanimously passed the House in March. ....
By Rudi Keller Missouri Independent The Missouri Senate has defeated a three-pronged effort to expand gambling in Missouri while suppressing unregulated devices that offer cash prizes to players. The vote that defeated the bill may have been the last chance this legislative session to address the proliferation of devices that some prosecutors have attacked as illegal and that others have refused to file charges over. “I am disappointed Senate Bill 98 reached an impasse on the Senate floor last night,” the sponsor, state Sen. Denny Hoskins, said in a statement released after Tuesday s vote. Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, accused casino companies and companies placing the “gray market” machines in bars, convenience stores and other retail locations of working to undermine his bill. ....
