Echo Pilot The Greencastle-Antrim School Board is scheduled to decide next week how to close the $867,157 gap between revenues and expenditures in the 2021-22 budget. The board is expected to approve the final budget during a meeting beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 17, in the high school library. Members of the public can attend the meeting in person and it also can be viewed on YouTube, accessible from the school district website. The finance committee is recommending a 2.5% property tax increase and taking $250,000 from capital reserves to make up most of the difference between $44,272,428 in projected revenues and $45,139,585 in projected expenditures, according to committee member Tracy Baer. ....

(Decker Westenburg) On the brink of winter semester midterms and in preparation for marriage to his fiancé, Baylee Dowdle, BYU student Tyler Van Patten found himself scouring the Provo housing market for a home to live in. After finding the perfect place, he grabbed the opportunity to rent it and began jumping through the many hoops required by the owner. Both he and his fiancé provided references from ecclesiastical and workplace leaders, and even answered questions about whether or not they smoked or drank. After just a few days, Van Patten was scammed out of $1,000. ....
The board voted 7-2 in favor of Hanks recommendation. Board member Tracy Baer, who voted no along with Lindsey Mowen, said she thinks the competency-based calendar is moving in a good direction, but she s not sure the kids, parents, community and teaching staff are ready for it year. After a year of COVID-19, she feels they just want to go back to normal and are tired of change. Things to think about Schools have changed in the last year, the pandemic continues and it is unclear what s ahead, but asynchronous Wednesdays have served the district well this year, said Dr. Lura Hanks, superintendent. In asynchronous learning, the instruction is not in real time, but is available online. Several adjustments have been made to when G-A schools are open to in-person learning over the course of the year so far, but virtual Wednesdays have been observed since day one at all grade levels. They free teachers up to meet with parents, do collaborative planning with other teachers and give feedback to students anything that takes them out of the classroom on Wednesdays, Hanks said. ....
