Seven citizens who had earlier been detained under the Digital Security Act and ICT Act today demanded a judicial probe into the alleged torture of writer Mushtaq Ahmed and cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore in custody and the trial of responsible law enforcement members.
The group of teachers, journalists and activists also demanded abolition of the controversial law and amendment of the ICT Act with human rights-centric principles.
In a statement, they said: We are deeply concerned about the recent death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in prison and fear for all inmates. At the same time, we have also learned Kishore had complained that he had been tortured in custody of the law enforcement agencies after his arrest on the nig ....

Description of the situation:
Mushtaq Ahmed and the release on bail of cartoonist Mr. 
Ahmed Kabir Kishore. The two had been held in pre-trial detention for ten months for their criticism of the authorities’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On February 25, 2021, Mushtaq Ahmed was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where he had been transferred from the Kashimpur Jail. At the time of publication of this urgent appeal, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown. ....

Cartoonist Ahmed Kishore finally secured bail yesterday after languishing in jail for 10 months in a case filed under the controversial Digital Security Act.
A High Court bench granted him bail, six days after writer Mushtaq Ahmed, another accused in the case, died while in custody. The two were prosecuted for their cartoons and writings.
The death of Mushtaq, who was denied bail six times and kept at the Kashimpur jail in Gazipur, last Thursday sparked protests across the country. People of all walks of life, mainly students and teachers, hit the streets demanding justice for Mushtaq and release of Kishore. ....
