The Roanoke Times A 2 1/2-year-old male deer legally harvested in southwestern Montgomery County tested positive for chronic wasting disease, according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. The deer was brought to a taxidermist in late November 2020 and DWR obtained the sample in January as part of the Departmentâs statewide CWD surveillance efforts, according to a DWR news release. At the time of harvest, the hunter did not notice any outward signs of disease and the deer appeared to be in good condition, according to the release. At this point, there is no evidence of a linkage between this new occurrence and prior ones in the state; the deer was harvested more than 160 miles from the closest prior detection in Madison County, according to the release. ....

(KAIT) - Several Lawrence County businesses and homes were damaged by strong winds overnight. As you drive in Walnut Ridge, you can see multiple power lines collapsed and homes that trees fell through. While some homes had minimal damage, others werenât as lucky. As the city worked to restore power, others worked to get tree limbs off their roof. âAbout 1:45 to 2:00 this morning my wife woke me up and said she thought a tree had fell on the house,â Kyle Smelser, who lives near Ashley Avenue, said. âSo we got up and kind of looked around and it did.â ....

He said while drought-like conditions are very common for the state, this year is worse than normal, especially considering back-to-back dry winters with little snow and rain. In fact, this year is a critically dry year, Orrock said.It is so dry, in fact, that DWR canceled Thursday s snow survey at Phillips Station because there was not enough snow on the ground. Orrock said much of the lower elevation snow is already gone and some of the higher elevation snow is beginning to melt as well. Snowmelt from the Sierra runs off into streams and rivers, feeding reservoirs and the water table, resulting in groundwater. (KAIT) - Walnut Ridge will have a bit more protection at Stewart Park. Starting Monday, multiple security cameras were being installed around the park. A total of 16 cameras will be put up in addition to extra lighting. Sheriff Jordan Cooksey said the park has had some problems with vandalism during the summer months. “Particularly at nighttime, there are some dark areas,” Cooksey said. “Our park has a lot of woods in it, so it’s difficult to light adequately.” ....
