Ottawa man accused of driving with no licence into Rideau River

OTTAWA
Ontario Provincial Police say a 34-year-old Ottawa man is facing charges, including driving without a licence, after allegedly driving a car into the Rideau River Tuesday afternoon.
Officers were called to the river near Highway 417 at the Vanier Parkway at around 5:10 p.m. on reports that a driver had entered the water.
Police said in a press release Wednesday morning that the driver was not hurt, but had left the scene of the crash and was found some time later.
Raymond Edwards is facing charges of dangerous driving, failing to remain at the scene of a collision and driving without a licence. ....

An Ottawa man faces several charges, including driving without a licence, after a car made a splash-landing in the Rideau River Tuesday afternoon.
The Ottawa OPP detachment said that they were called to the crash at about 5:10 p.m.

Police said that a vehicle travelling westbound on Highway 417 left the roadway near the Vanier Parkway, plowed through a field near the RCMP complex, and went into the river.
The driver, who was unhurt, got out and fled, police allege. ....

While I sympathize with Kelly Egan as he jostles with the eclectic traffic on the NCC’s multi-use pathways, I do not support his recommendation to abandon the practice of announcing a cyclist’s presence and intentions to pass by ringing one’s bell.
Neither does the Highway Traffic Act. Having a bell in good working order is actually the law: “Every motor vehicle, motor assisted bicycle and bicycle shall be equipped with an alarm bell, gong or horn, which shall be kept in good working order and sounded whenever it is reasonably necessary to notify pedestrians or others of its approach.” Failure to do so can result in a fine of $110 (including court fees and surcharges). ....
