Australia loves a hinterland. So much so that we re one of the only countries that has this word in our everyday vocabulary. Plenty of coastal cities around the world have patches of lush, hilly countryside on their outskirts, but few refer to them with this German word meaning the land behind . In Australia though? We embrace the term, and we embrace the concept. After all, what could be better than escaping the heat and the hustle of the city in favour of the clear air and mountainous beauty of a hinterland area? From Cairns to Byron Bay to Adelaide to Perth, so many of our favourite coastal towns also boast access to these idyllic slices of altitude. ....

I read with some interest and also, I am sad to admit, disappointment, the article by Marc Hendrickx ( Echo, 17 February). As a climber I understand his concerns and can empathise with his sense of potential loss and need to protect what is important to him, but am not convinced by his arguments. I am particularly concerned with his criticism of NPWS for preferencing the views of the Bundjalung nation over those of the late Ngaraakwal Elder Marlene Boyd, who stated, ‘How can the public experience the spiritual significance of the land if they do not climb the summit and witness creation’. ....

Cr James Owen said he had spoken to the office of Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean and was told no decision had been cemented. This is despite lobby group Right to Climb releasing documents obtained through Freedom of Information which indicate plans for the track to be permanently closed from November 25, 2022. The mountain, also known as Mount Warning, was closed in March last year because of rising concerns about the pandemic, and has not reopened since. ....
