Oklahoma senior Justin Thomas was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after picking up a major-decision victory last week. Thomas nailed down his second consecutive win over Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Sheets, who was ranked No. 15 nationally, in Sunday’s Bedlam dual in Stillwater. Justin Thomas OU Athletics The 157-pound Thomas, ranked No. 10 in the nation, registered a 13-5 major decision to give the Sooners one of four match victories. Thomas used a last-second takedown of Sheets to secure the major decision and four points for OU. It was Thomas’ second Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor of the season ....
The history of the Bedlam wrestling rivalry has favored Oklahoma State, and the recent history of the rivalry has heavily favored the Cowboys. The overall series record is 143-27-10, and the Cowboys have only lost to the Sooners once since 2008. So far this season the Cowboys are 7-0 while the Sooners are 5-3, with two losses to teams the Cowboys have beat in Northern Iowa and Iowa State. The Cowboys are going to be favored again on Sunday when they take the mats for the 181st time vs. their Bedlam rivals, but it may not be that simple. Right now the Cowboys are pretty beat up. Kaid Brock was out and did not travel to Iowa this past weekend, Wyatt Sheets was back for the first time in a few weeks, with a heavily braced knee that clearly had him hobbled. Undefeated freshman Dustin Plott did not wrestle vs. Northern Iowa, and Daton Fix is out under a suspension until Feb. 10. ....

This team further separated itself from the rest of the Big Ten conference over the weekend with a dominating 36-6 win over No. 9 Illinois. Questions, however, still remain around how much of a threat Penn State will be to an Iowa title and how many All-Americans Iowa can put on the podium. N.C. Freshmen Get Their Toughest Tests One of the most talked about things of this season for Oklahoma State is its No. 1 recruiting class and the fact that we’ve seen three of those newcomers in the starting lineup so far this season. Trevor Mastrogiovanni has been the starter at 125, Dustin Plott has been the starter at 174 and AJ Ferrari at 197. All three are undefeated and, for the most part, have comfortably worked their way through this season without a ton of resistance. Howeva, Mastrogiovanni will wrestle UNI’s Brody Teske (who is currently ranked No. 5 in the country), Dustin Plottwill see Julien Broderson and Lance Runyon who are both nationally ranked. Ferrari will still be favored in both of his matches, but has a really intriguing one with Iowa State’s Yonger Bastida who was a U23 World Medalist for Cuba. ....
