The isiZulu-speaking areas of South Africa have the largest population of Southern ground hornbills after the Kruger National Park.
So says Limpopo-based ornithologist Lucy Kemp, who this week won a prestigious international Whitley Award for her work on the large black, red-faced birds that, in half a generation, have gone from endangered to critically endangered.

Argentine scientist Kini Roesler wins Whitley Award for nature conservation in Patagonia


Kini and his team worked for years in the remote landscapes of Argentine Patagonia in order to successfully stabilize the population of its symbol, the Hooded Grebe.
The Hooded Grebe is 21st on the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) birds list
In 2009, he had a plane ticket to the United States and everything set as a young biologist to start a PhD on tropical Andean birds. However, Argentine biologist Ignacio “Kini” Roesler, decided to stay at home to investigate the dire situation of the Hooded Grebe and help it from extinction. Twelve years later, Kini won a Whitley Award for its work with the Patagonia Programme for the conservation of the vulnerable Patagonian bird. ....

Nigerian conservationist wins £40,000 award

A Nigerian conservationist, Iroro Tanshi, has received a Whitley Award worth £40,000 to save the short-tailed roundleaf bat after discovering the country’s first and only known population.
The Whitley Awards are presented annually to individuals from the Global South by UK-based charity, the Whitley Fund for Nature.
According to a statement on Thursday, Tanshi is one of six conservationists to be recognised in 2021 for their commitment to conserving some of the planet’s most endangered species and spectacular natural habitats.
The statement said the short-tailed roundleaf bat had not been seen in the wild for 45 years. ....

Four African conservation heroes recognised at UK charity awards

CAPE TOWN - Four African conservation heroes have won awards for their efforts to protect wildlife and natural environments at the UK charity Whitley Fund for Nature’s (WFN) awards.
The Whitley Awards support grass-root conservationists from the global south who are leading impactful projects in their home countries, according to a statement issued by the charity on Thursday.
After an international search, in 2021 they recognised work to safeguard sea turtles (Kenya), southern ground hornbills (South Africa), hooded grebes (Argentina), Lahille’s bottlenose dolphins (Brazil), bats (Nigeria), Amur falcons (India) and elephants (Kenya). ....
