Temperatures will be mostly 20s this weekend, with teens and single digits at night. Higher elevation summits will be colder of course, mostly in the lower 20s, with wind chills mostly in the single digits. Those headed to summits should carry snowshoes and be prepared with traction devices for icy conditions. The cold weather has helped us retain the bit of snow we’ve gotten. The ground is now frozen enough for the most part to begin to build a nice base, though more snow is needed. No backcountry can yet be recommended, but there is some skiing on the Jackrabbit Trail, with the section from Whiteface Inn Lane to the top of pass best, and Old Mtn. Road skiable, but thin. The Whiteface Memorial Highway is skiable, and the uphill program has ....
Spencer Morrissey heads up Wilmington Peak. (Photo provided) To approach Wilmington Peak from the south you should use this approach for the best direct access. From the trailhead the trail starts out on a flat course before gaining elevation and settled water. This route can be a very wet hike most times of the year. During the rainy season it can have running water on the trail. The climb along the trail at this point starts to get very steep before topping on the shoulder of Morgan Mountain to your right. From the top of the pass the trail descends along a steady course to the shore of Copper Kiln Pond. There has been a ton of beaver activity in the area and at times the trail can be flooded, be prepared. The trail then follows along the shore to the lean-to and camping area. Just past the lean-to, a herd path can be seen on the left that will access you around the pond farther and the faint herd path that is developing to the summit of Wilmington Peak. ....
