US Forest Service: Cause of East Troublesome Fire remains undetermined

Officials with the US Forest Service are refuting reports they’re close to pinpointing what or who caused the massive East Troublesome Fire in Grand County.
On Friday, a US Forest Service spokesperson reiterated that the investigation has revealed the fire was “human-caused” but said there is no word yet on exactly what started the deadly blaze.
“There is no update to the investigation,” she said. “The investigation is still in progress.”
Multiple people have contacted the Sky-Hi News in recent days saying that investigators are close to filing charges. However, the USFS spokesperson said that investigators are still interviewing potential witnesses and gathering information, and they are not making any announcements about a cause at this moment. ....

8 more reasons no one should want to move to Colorado

8 more reasons why this state isn t so great.
1. Fire risk
In 2020, four different fires that burned in Colorado were larger than the largest blaze to ever previously occur in the state. Cameron Peak Fire was 208,663 acres, East Troublesome Fire was 192,560 acres, Mullen Fire burned mostly in Wyoming, but was 176,878 acres, and the Pine Gulch Fire was 139,007 acres – all larger than the Hayman Fire of 2002, which reached 137,760 acres.
Those included, eight of the 10 largest Colorado fires took place in the last decade. As Colorado continues to struggle with drought, dry conditions persist, as does an increased fire risk and a high possibility of large future blazes. It s common for wildfires to impact daily life in the Centennial State, whether that means a weekend off of outdoor recreation or a blaze burning down your own property. ....

Carbondale’s Virtual First Friday for March is an extension of CORE’s Imagine Climate 2021 programming and explores the intersection between art and science. Rayna Benzeev, a fourth-year phD candidate at CU Boulder in the environmental studies department, said historically science has struggled with communicating to a general audience. The NESTed Gallery
in Carbondale gives sci-artists artists with scientific backgrounds and vice-versa the chance to captivate the public through various strategies.
,” she said. “We are a group of seven chin characters that they’re upside down human faces, with a face and a wig on the chin part that try to make climate change funny. So the point is that climate change is often presented as this doom and gloom scenario…But there’s reason to have hope and reason to make it funny rather than super serious all the time.” ....

County to submit final grant application for Pine Gulch Fire mitigation

Mesa County hopes to get more than a half-million dollars in a federal grant to help mitigate watershed damage done during last summer’s Pine Gulch Fire, the third largest in the state’s history.
The county has applied for, and is poised to receive, $570,000 in a matching grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a U.S. Department of Agriculture agency that provides technical and financial assistance to private landowners to better manage agricultural and forest lands.
The county is putting $120,000 toward the grant, money that’s already included in this year’s budget.
Andrew Martsolf, the county’s emergency services director, said the money is needed to help protect numerous creeks and watershed left bare by the fire, subjecting them to massive erosion if work isn’t done to mitigate that damage. ....
