Tackling smoking, obesity and alcohol abuse is key to keeping the average life expectancy of New Zealanders rising, University of Waikato Professor of Population Health Ross Lawrenson says.
Data published by Statistics New Zealand on Tuesday showed average life expectancy at birth has continued to rise in this country in recent years, but the gains are slowing.
Based on death rates in the 2017-2019 period, life expectancy for New Zealand females was 83.5 years and for males it was 80 years, Stats NZ said. That was an increase of 0.3 years for women and 0.5 years for men since the 2012-2014 period. ....
