Student Army pitches in to help with native forest restoration

It’s going to be so important for the region, given there’s virtually no native forest from the Richmond Ranges to the Tākaka Hill. It’s an incredibly generous donation to the community and the nation.
A project to replant a native forest on the Waimea Inlet got some reinforcements from Christchurch over the weekend in the form of the Student Volunteer Army.
On Saturday, about 30 volunteers planted 5000 native trees on a patch of land overlooking the inlet.
The plantings are part of an ecological restoration project, led by Forest and Bird, that has been going since 2019 to restore six hectares of private land back into native forest. ....

Seagrass disappears from muddy Motupipi estuary in Golden Bay

The Motupipi estuary experienced a rapid rise in sedimentation after 2010, which is believed to be linked to floods in December 2011. There appears to no longer be any seagrass in the estuary.
“Mud percentage is the problem,” James told councillors when he presented reports on four of the district’s estuaries, outlining survey work completed in 2019 and 2020.
There had been a rapid rise in sedimentation in the Motupipi estuary since 2010, which was believed to be linked to floods in December 2011.
Seagrass was sensitive to light in the water column, the photic zone.
“If it gets too diminished, the seagrass will likely disappear,” James said. ....

Tasman District Council appoints team to handle Covid stimulus projects

Projects aimed at enhancing the internationally significant Waimea Inlet in the Nelson-Tasman region have received Government and council funding.
A council staff report says the programme management office has been established to “support project managers during all post-application life stages of projects”. At present, there are 18 separate projects across the programme, of which several of the larger projects have multiple stages.

The Motueka Recreation Centre is one community hall to benefit from Government funding.
Water services projects such as treatment plant upgrades and water main renewals are valued at more than $13m. A lower Motueka River stop bank refurbishment project is valued at $10m while another $7.8m is earmarked for improving freshwater, although some of that funding is still to be approved. ....
