Council on Aging plans June events

While the Council on Aging is still closed, it is hosting several outdoor activities, weather permitting. The center may reopen in August.
Thanks to the Onset Bay Center, a different outdoor program will take place each month this summer. On June 15, seniors can explore Onset Bay by kayak, starting at 9 a.m. The program is free, but space is limited and registration is required. To register, call Kat Garofoli at 508-999-6363, ext. 277.
Coffee and Conversation takes place each Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. behind the Multi-Service Center. Get re-acquainted or meet new friends.
Seniors can join the Wednesday Walking Group weekly at 10 a.m. at the Wareham Middle School field, weather permitting. Sign up to join by calling 508-291-3130. ....

Everyone 'safe and sound' after officers respond to unknown incident at schools

Wareham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood reported “everybody’s out safe and sound,” after police responded to an unknown incident in the area of Minot Forest Elementary School and Wareham Middle School at about 2:30 p.m.
No details were provided as to the reason for the heightened police presence, but Shaver-Hood said the schools “really appreciate the additional safety.”
After the incident, people subscribed to the school’s emergency alert system took to social media to share screenshots of an email message sent out by Shaver-Hood. ....

During a May 11 meeting, the Board of Selectmen unanimously authorized Wareham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood to submit two statements of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority. 
Submitting a statement of interest is “the critical first step” in applying to grants for school building repairs, according to the state organization. The statement of interest informs the Massachusetts School Building Authority “about deficiencies that may exist in a local school facility and how those deficiencies inhibit the delivery of the district’s educational program.”  ....

School Committee approves older students' return to full-time in-person learning

Wareham Public Schools will bring its Middle School and High School students back for in-person instruction five days a week on Monday, April 26. A unanimous School Committee vote on April 7 confirmed that all of Wareham’s oldest learners will be back in the classroom on a full-time basis in less than three weeks. 
Jeffrey Riley, the state’s commissioner or education, has not yet announced a deadline for when remote instruction would no longer count toward required student learning time hours for high school students. But in March, he announced that remote instruction would no longer count for middle school students after April 28, prompting the district to bring back its students later before that deadline or risk ....
