County election sees low voter turn-out; winners of contested City Council races named

VAN WERT – Van Wert County’s Special Election on Tuesday had a low
voter turnout with 1,214 ballots cast or 6.03 percent of total
registered voters in the county. There were only two contested races,
however, both on city-only ballots.
Gerald T. Mazur received 324
votes or 54.09 percent of the Republican vote to Kirby R. Kelly’s 275
votes or 45.91 percent for the Van Wert City Council President seat.
Mazur’s name will still appear on the November ballot.

VAN WERT – After an extended period of time of non-activities due to COVID-19, Van Wert County Council on Aging director Kevin Matthews is excited to announce that summer day trips and several indoor activities are starting up again, but with very strict restrictions that must be adhered to.
Council on Aging day trips will begin on Wednesday, June 23, with a trip to the Ark Encounter in Williamston, Kentucky. Other trips will include a trip to Port Clinton in order to tour the Maritime Museum, Merry Go Round Museum and Aviation Museum on Wednesday, July 22. Then, on Wednesday, Sept.15, travelers will visit such sites as the Lambright Country Chimes, Dutch Country Market and Wood Shop in the Shipshewana, Ind. area, including lunch in an Amish home.

On Thursday, the Van Wert County General Health District reported the additional death of a resident of Van Wert County who tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths for county residents to 47. The age range for the deceased is 60-69 years.
There is an increase of 59 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since Thursday, January 14, for a total of 1,958 confirmed cases.
“We appreciate the effort of our community to help lower the spread of COVID-19,” said Environmental Health Director Britt Menchhofer.
Currently, the County General Health District is vaccinating those in the 80 and above age group. Vaccination clinics are being held at the Van Wert Council on Aging and are by appointment only. In order to best serve the community and utilize its vaccine supply properly, the Health District will not accept walk-ins at the vaccination clinic.
