A man has drowned in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says it happened Monday near noon at East Loon Bay of Loon Lake, which borders the Ontario-Minnesota border.
Authorities say a passing storm capsized a canoe with two men from Colorado inside.
A 75-year-old was able to swim to shore with their gear while the other stayed with the canoe.
When he returned, the other was missing.
Searchers later found 65-year-old Wayne Morrow in 61 feet of water.
Neither man was wearing a lifejacket. ....

Colorado man drowns after canoe capsizes during storm in Boundary Waters

ELY, Minn. (FOX 9) - A Colorado man died in an apparent drowning after his canoe capsized during a storm in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Monday morning.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, two men from Colorado were canoeing in East Loon Bay on Loon Lake when they ran into heavy rain and winds from a severe storm. Their canoe capsized from a wave and both men were thrown into the water.
One of the men, a 65-year-old from Grand Junction, was able to swim to shore with their gear while the other, identified as 73-year-old Wayne Morrow from Fort Lupton, stayed with their gear. When the 65-year-old returned, Morrow was missing. ....

Hennepin County doubles down on vaccine incentive program
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) â Minnesotaâs most populous county is boosting its incentive program for COVID-19 vaccine shots. The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved an additional $250,000 to promote vaccine shots, on top of the original $100,000 that was allocated earlier from federal recovery funds. Commissioner Chris LaTondresse says the program has increased the number of shots and Tuesdayâs action âdoubles down on this promising strategyâ to help fight the coronavirus. The county used the original investment to buy 2,235 Visa gift cards worth $50 each. The incentive program includes partnerships with community groups to host vaccine events and provide perks such as free meals, groceries, and entertainment. ....

ELY â Canoe Country Outfitters made the 911 call. A canoe overturned on the East Loon Bay Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. One man swam to shore. The other was missing.
It was around 11:41 a.m. on Monday when the St. Louis County Sheriffâs Office received the call and joined its Rescue Squad, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, Crane Lake Fire and First Responders and the Orr Ambulance in responding to Handbergâs Marine on Crane Lake for the water emergency on East Loon.
The men, Denis Guenther, 65, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Wayne Morrow, 73, of Fort Lupton, Colo., had been canoeing on the lake âwhen they encountered heavy rain and winds due to a severe storm passing through the area,â the St. Louis County Sheriffâs Office said in a news release on Tuesday. ....
