She needed assistance getting to and from the bathroom, but nursing staff did not help her.
Jarvis was found dead Dec. 13 after she fell and accidentally hanged herself when part of her hospital gown got caught on a bathroom door handle, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
The state health department cited Van Duyn for its handling of her care.
Van Duyn’s nurse aides did not escort Jarvis even though her written care plan said she was at high risk of falling and required help, according to a state health department inspection report obtained by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. ....

Syracuse, N.Y. Nearly 40% of Central New York nursing home employees are still not vaccinated against Covid-19, four months after the government made them a top priority in its massive vaccine roll-out.
While 87% of Central New York nursing home residents have been vaccinated, only 64% of staffers have gotten shots, according to the state Health Department. Fewer than one-third of staffers at some homes in the region have been vaccinated. ....

Finger Lakes Health has announced the appointment of Audrey Torio as director of nursing at Huntington Living Center in Waterloo.
Torio has over 17 years of progressive nursing leadership experience within the long term care community in Central New York. She has experience in various settings with a concentration in geriatrics including skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation and managed long term care. Torio also has a background in acute hospital care and oncology and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Elmira College, Elmira, NY. ....

ALBANY Nursing homes in parts of New York hit worst by this winter’s COVID-19 surge say they’re struggling to find enough staff as workers have gotten sick or needed to quarantine.
About 80 nursing homes have reported nursing shortages as of early January, according to The Associated Press’ analysis of the latest federal and state data. Most are located in parts of western and central New York that saw their first serious outbreaks of the virus begin in late autumn.
At The Pearl nursing home in Rochester, a core group of nurses worked double shifts for weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, said administrator Christine Schaller. ....
