The government’s insistence on doing everything possible to stimulate housing prices certainly bolsters its electoral chances but, in the process, it is accentuating and cementing inequality (“How to stop the house price madness”, February 18). Clearly, those homeowners who own their homes outright and have good income are able to help their children enter the housing market.
On the other side, an increasing proportion of low-income households are being locked out of homeownership and are being forced into becoming life-long private renters with all the attendant insecurity and anxiety. Alternatively, they are purchasing homes which they can ill-afford and spending a considerable proportion of their income on servicing the mortgage. According to the ABS, at least a million low-income households were in housing stress (spe ....

“In the late 1950s, the sleepy branch of a UK bank, with only five employees, in the small suburb of Idle, received a rare visit by a team of bank inspectors, who tested the behind-the-counter alarm system as part of their investigations,” reports Ian Glendon of Ashmore (Qld). “Pressing the buttons did not appear to activate the usual circuits. While the inspectors were investigating this apparent malfunction, a tray with five mugs of tea appeared courtesy of a staff member from the cafe next door.”
Did you notice that all our stories about employees carrying guns (C8) were all about men? Of course, it could be because it was predominantly men that were employed by banks and the like from that era, but that doesn’t explain why Eva Elbourne was unarmed, and untroubled, as she carried a backpack full of diamonds around the city multiple times. Merran Loewenthal of Vienna votes for the “frightening females” idea, sharing that in London in the 1970s ....

One couldn’t ask for a better person for the Australian of the Year gong than well-deserving Grace Tame, the first Tasmanian to receive one (“Change the date, says Grace”, January 26). She is not going to muck around. In the little time she’s been in the public eye, Tame has already said what most of us feel — change the Australia Day date. I can’t wait to hear her views in the days ahead. Congratulations, Grace.

Delighted to see such an eclectic mix of women who have taken out the top Australia Day honours this year. These women are true embodiment of the saying of Australia’s Patron Saint Mary MacKillop — “never see a need without doing something about it”. ....

When the next drought comes, from where will we source replacement water for what has disappeared into the void beneath our catchments, $100 million or not (‘‘Coal miner offers $100m to counter water losses from its mine’’, January 12)?
Frank McGrath, Bulli
I am having difficulty in understanding how $100 million will prevent cracks, subsidence and water loss and yet still allow the project to be ‘‘a positive contributor to the metropolitan water supply’’. ....

Fiscal inequality throws society out of balance

John Hewson (‘‘Rising inequality can’t be ignored’’, December 31) shines a light on an enduring problem in Australian society and reveals a lack of government policy to address the issue. If anything typifies the thinking of the NSW Coalition government on this issue then it was its decision to go ahead with the fireworks display when only those wealthy enough to live within spitting distance of the harbour, or able to pay exorbitant prices for a meal with a view, will be able to enjoy this taxpayer-funded extravaganza. The term ‘‘Green Zone’’ itself reeks of segregation and has commonly been used in many a gloomy futuristic novel or film. With the JobSeeker benefit to be slashed from New Year’s Day perhaps our wishes should be less for a happy new year and more for a much kinder one. ....
