Greek tragedy meets American ingenuity in
Iphigenia, the long-awaited opera by Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding. A mythical work in progress for the last several years, it has now reached a developmental stage foreign to most other operatic productions: a crowdfunding campaign.
On Monday, an Indiegogo post was published with the stated intention of raising $75,000 to carry the opera one last lap to the finish line. The campaign is the work of Real Magic, a company that Spalding and executive producer Jeff Tang created to produce
Iphigenia independently, with producer Cath Brittan and Octopus Theatricals.

This week there are several streaming events to consider. First, on Sunday at noon MT, there’s a celebration of “40 Years in Yiddishland,” marking the 40th anniversary of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and the Yiddish Book Center.
At this juncture, klezmer (the folk musical sounds of Eastern European Jews) has reintegrained itself into the American music scene and the Klezmer Conservatory Band has played a key role in that. Interestingly, there is a Denver connection here due to presence of the great clarinetist Don Byron in an early version of this Klezmer band. Later Byron would spend two years in Denver directing Metro State University’s Jazz and American Improvised Music Program before returning to the East Coast.
18th edition of Panama Jazz Festival underway, featuring Jordanian artists
Bringing together internationally renowned jazz artists, educators and jazz fans from around the world, the 18th Panama Jazz Festival is now underway. The festival will take place virtually on its online platform through Jan. 23.
Among the main artists at this year s festival is Panamanian pop star Erika Ender in a special duet with jazz pianist and festival artistic director Danilo Pérez. Panamanian salsa star Rubén Blades will perform with Roberto Delgado Salsa Big Band. As a special event, the festival will feature a virtual concert of the Wayne Shorter Quartet s latest performance and the celebration of their 18-year musical collaboration.
