UTICA For almost a half-century, Linda Oiler has watched hunters, wildlife officers and friends come into the little butcher shop in northern Licking County, each expecting to convert their harvest into future meals.
Over her 47 years there, she has overseen the processing of countless deer, hogs, cattle and even an elk or two at Oiler Meat Processing. But at age 81, the white-haired matriarch of the business says it s time to exchange her omnipresent red apron for the comforts of her beloved vegetable garden and her 120-acre farm not far from work. ....

Food pantries need hunters' gifts of venison


DENTON — As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, food pantries and distribution organizations continue helping those in need, in spite of the many challenges.
Hagerstown-based Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry is encouraging hunters to donate their deer to participating deer processors. Those processors, in turn, will butcher and donate the meat to local food banks or to the Maryland Food Bank for wider distribution.
Helping those efforts is Amy Cawley, who grew up on a grain farm near Denton. She has been the Farm to Food Bank coordinator for the Maryland Food Bank’s Eastern Shore branch in Salisbury for 10 years. Her focus is securing fresh-edible produce. ....
