'Team of the Year': Behind team's success story

NC appeals judge censured for ‘toxic work environment’
RALEIGH (AP) A North Carolina Court of Appeals judge was censured on Friday after a judicial investigation determined his refusal to squarely address his chief aide’s bullying, profanity and dishonesty caused a “toxic work environment” for female law clerks who worked for him.
State Supreme Court justices unanimously affirmed the recommendation by the state Judicial Standards Commission that Judge Hunter Murphy violated the state Code of Judicial Conduct and brought the judicial office into disrepute with his actions.
The commission’s investigation found Murphy “downplayed, minimized and mischaracterized” the behavior of his executive assistant in 2017 to a human resources employee and commission leaders. The male assistant was a close, personal friend of Murphy’s from high school whom the judge hired. Murphy ultimately asked him to resign in early 2018. ....

Appeals Court Judge Hunter Murphy censured for condoning workplace harassment by friend-turned-aide

The Supreme Court of North Carolina ordered the censure of Appeals Court Judge Hunter Murphy for enabling a “toxic work environment” in his chamber, in a disciplinary order reaffirming the Judicial Standards Commission recommendation Friday. The ruling was unanimous, with the exception of Justice Mark Davis, who did not take part in consideration of the matter.
Murphy, a Republican, hired his high school friend Ben Tuite as his executive assistant, the senior position on his three-person law clerk staff, after being elected in 2016.
It wasn’t before long that Tuite started bullying and harassing his coworkers, exhibiting a “pattern of making lewd or sexually inappropriate remarks in the workplace,” according to the court order. ....

REPUBLICAN COA JUDGE CENSURED FOR ALLOWING SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Judge Hunter Murphy s conduct wasn t bad enough to warrant suspension or removal from the bench, the state Supreme Court said in an opinion posted Friday, but it did merit censure. Law clerks in Murphy s office told investigators that Tuite made comments of a sexual or inappropriate nature and that they told Murphy about it. In one incident, Tuite was talking about a female job applicant and called her breasts fun bags. The judge, the Judicial Standards Commission reported, was in the room at the time. The judge repeatedly condoned and enabled toxic behavior, the commission found. When some of the problems were reported to the Administrative Office of the Courts human resources department, the judge lacked candor and downplayed, minimized and mischaracterized Mr. Tuite’s actions, the commission found. ....
