A Wesleyan Methodist Church was built circa 1855 on the south-east corner of Lot 12, Concession 3, Ashfield Township. Rev. J.S. Evans was the first minister of record for the circuit, which also included Nile. Throughout the next decade, services were often conducted by students and lay persons.

In 1866, a building committee was appointed, and the Dungannon Mission Church was completed by 1868. A church in Nile was also completed at this time. The original Ashfield building and site were sold and the land re-deeded back to the original owner.
