Joanne Carroll/Stuff
West Coast farmer and Cowboy Paradise owner Mike Milne.
The court confirmed the interim name suppression order had lapsed. When contacted by Stuff on Monday, Milne said he could not comment.
He has owned the Upper Arahura Valley land, now known as Cowboy Paradise, since 1994.
Milne has consent to build a whole western town, including a 500m main street with 57 buildings including bars, restaurants, accommodation and a function room. It remained unfinished at the time of his arrest.

Dr Caroline Orchiston explains the Alpine Fault and the damage the earthquake will wreak. (Video first published in May 2018)
As new research reveals the Alpine Fault is more likely than previously thought to rupture in the next 50 years, JOANNE NAISH asks West Coasters: Are you ready?
“The first weekend of being here I said to the children ‘right let’s plan our route to high ground’, so we walked up to the airport and we all know to head up and meet there.”

Govt could buy out some Franz Josef land to protect town from flood-prone river

GEORGE HEARD/STUFF
Drone footage shows full extent of the damage to the Waiho Bridge, near Franz Josef on the West Coast, in March 2019.
A proposal to buy out flood-prone farming land at Franz Josef and move the state highway away from the Waiho River will be put before the Government.
The West Coast Regional Council sees the project as a longer term solution to the town’s hazards than building more stopbanks. It would involve 2500 hectares of private land with a capital value of $30 million.
The Government announced on Wednesday that it would release $12m for new stopbanks along the northern banks of the flood-prone Waiho River. ....

Higher risk of Alpine Fault quake highlights need for preparation on West Coast

RNZ
The massive Alpine Fault is due for another big earthquake and scientists have been drawing up a scenario of what the devastation would look like. (First published May 2018)
The West Coast is one of the regions most at risk if a massive earthquake is generated by the Alpine Fault, but local leadership say the region is prepared.
New research has shown the chances of the South Island’s Alpine Fault generating a damaging earthquake in the next 50 years are much higher than previously thought.
The research, led by Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington senior lecturer Dr Jamie Howarth, showed the probability of that earthquake occurring before 2068 is about 75 per cent. It had previously been thought to be about 30 per cent. ....
