With kids' mental health suffering due to pandemic, Jewish experts step up help

When New York was caught in the midst of a brutal wave of COVID-19 last spring, the daily death toll reaching as high as 800, the stress for many Orthodox Jewish schoolchildren was overwhelming.
They were catching the coronavirus in high numbers. And their parents or grandparents were frequently falling ill many subsequently died or developed long-haul symptoms.
Now, a year on, that trauma hasn’t subsided.
“That was very hard for children to live with,” said psychologist Norman Blumenthal, director of the trauma, bereavement and crisis response team at Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services. ....

Two Hudson Valley agencies secure $4 million for mental health services

WASHINGTON – Two agencies, one in Westchester and the other in Orange County, will receive $4 million each to provide Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic programs or mental health and addiction treatment.
Westchester Jewish Community Services in White Plains and Access: Supports for Living, Inc. in Middletown will use their grant to provide 24/7 crisis response, reducing hospital and emergency department visits, increasing addiction treatment participation, and raising the bar for quality care.
“It’s no surprise that demand for mental health and substance use services has dramatically increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this award allows us to continue providing critical support the moment it’s needed, eliminating gaps our community has faced fighting addiction and mental health issues,” said Ron Colavito, president and CEO of Access: Supports fo ....
