Celebrated author Pauline Cartwright has returned to her North Otago roots for her retirement. She shares with Ashley Smyth some of the wisdom she has gleaned from a lifetime of teaching, learning, and as the author of too many titles to count. Pauline Cartwright has been and always will be a writer. For as long as she can remember, she would put pen to paper at any opportunity. “If there was an opportunity to have a go at something in the writing field, I did … I used to write poems for the children’s pages, and things like that.” As a pupil at Weston School, and then Waitaki Girls’ High School, a young Pauline Webster was close friends with Elizabeth Flett, the daughter of well-known Mills and Boon author Essie Summers. ....
Tyler Gray and Catriona Schoneveld had never met before they auditioned for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr. But they now share a special bond, playing twins Jeremy and Jemima Potts in Musical Theatre Oamaru’s children’s theatre production. Rehearsals for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr started in March, and Catriona (9) and Tyler (10) had both enjoyed getting to know new people, and acting and interacting with them on and off stage. It had been an “amazing” experience watching it all come together, Tyler said. “I’ve really enjoyed it.” Tyler, who goes to Fenwick School, thought he would go for an ensemble role, because it was his first time auditioning for a Musical Theatre Oamaru production. ....

At Tuesday’s long-term plan hearings, the newly-formed Waitaki Events Centre Charitable Trust put forward a compelling case to the Waitaki District Council to support the project financially. Trust members Kevin Malcolm, Adair Craik and Deidre Senior recommended the council capped its contribution at $14million, as they provided concept drawings of the proposed six-court facility at Centennial Park, the preferred location. ....
