Simeon Nyachae: the larger-than-life civil servant who made his mark on Kenya

Simeon Nyachae, who passed away in early February at the age of 88, was among the men who shaped Kenya and made it one of Africa’s leading economies. For Kenya’s first 40 years of independence he was highly visible in government and helped to craft an economy oriented to the private sector that also was favourable to both large and small-scale agriculture.

Nyachae was among the favourite sons of Musa Nyandusi, who was the senior chief in Kisii District in western Kenya and supervisor of its other chiefs. This was the highest government post an African could hold in the colonial government. As independence approached Nyandusi was able to influence an appointment for Nyachae as district assistant (or officer) – which had been the entry grade for British colonial officers – in Kisii. He then moved to Machakos ....

23 January 1954: A brutal uprising in Kenya.
By RHS Crossman
The Labour politician Dick Crossman was in Kenya to gather information about the Mau Mau rebellion. The uprising was an attempt by a loose coalition of indigenous tribes to overthrow British rule and was marked by vicious atrocities and reprisals. Crossman found a fractured response by the British authorities and local defence forces under their control. Too many Home Guard troops and reservists were unreliable, too few British commanders understood the Kikuyu people or spoke the local languages. Repression seemed a blunt and counterproductive influence. White Kenya “can only save itself from destruction”, thought Crossman, “by abdicating its privileges while there is still time.” ....

Over the past several weeks, a glance at newspapers and primetime news would have one thinking that Armageddon has descended upon Kapedo, the village bordering Pokot and Turkana counties that media outlets have described as “sleepy”. One thing is certain though no one in Kapedo is sleeping soundly as government forces battle what we are told are a group of bandits and rudimentary militia. Police officers and locals alike have been slain gangland style while the region stands at the brink of a humanitarian crisis it’s a sad state of affairs. While I mourn the dead and empathise with the people of Turkana, I want to probe why the region’s security has always remained rickety and on stilts. Government officials, it seems, would want us to believe t ....
