VERY different views of the same street show just how much Ilkley changed in the 19th and 20th centuries. From a 1830s etching of Brook Street to two mid-twentieth century shots we can see how the area evolved from a village to a bustling spa town.The images, from the Ilkley Local History Hub, show a dramatic transformation over more than 100 years. The early etching looks north down Brook Street and shows small bridges over an open brook which flows from Corn Mill Gill down to the River Wharfe on the eastern side of the street. The carriage way was on the western side. ....

A TRAGIC accident which left a man paralysed has led to an outpouring of community support. Jaime Lunn, 46, of Addingham, came off his mountain bike on Ilkley Moor on April 25 last year, sustaining spinal injuries at C6 level, leaving him with no sensation below his chest. After spending months in hospital he was finally allowed home on November 13 but he desperately needs that home adapting to allow himself and his family - partner Caroline McCullough and their children Florence, nine, and Seth, aged seven - to lead as normal a life as possible. The house is not adapted in any way for someone in a wheelchair, with carpets, narrow doors, no accessible bathroom and no accessible kitchen. Access into the property is also very difficult without a professionally built wheelchair ramp. ....
HARDY souls have been blowing away any New Year’s Day cobwebs at two Bradford district events for years now but sadly not in 2021. The plunge in the River Wharfe and a spa pool on Ilkley Moor’s White Wells proved popular ways for people to see in in the new year in the past. Unfortunately both events cannot take place on this first day of 2021 as then pandemic continues to scupper our district’s annual traditions. In past years, the Otley swim has seen more than 50 swimmers, cheered on by hundreds of spectators, tackle a 20-metre stretch of the river beside Wharfemeadows Park. ....
