With good news on the weather front for the weekend, holiday makers and day-trippers have been given an added boost by the announcement from An Taisce of a record number of Blue Flag awards for water quality at the State’s beaches and marinas.
One of the world’s most recognised eco-labels, since it began in France in 1985, Blue Flags were awarded to 19 beaches and two marines when Ireland joined in 1988 – rising to 83 beaches and 10 marinas this year – two Blue Flags more than last year, a record high. ....

Three Louth beaches retain Blue Flag status

Louth County Council has retained Blue Flag status for Clogherhead, Port and Templetown beaches.
The globally recognised award is given to beaches with excellent water quality.
The three beaches in Co. Louth have now held a Blue Flag every year since 2009.
Meanwhile, Seapoint has also retained its Green Coast Award.
The EU standard recognises beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty.
No beaches in Co. Meath met the standard for either award.
A record 93 Blue Flags for clean beaches and marinas have been awarded in the Republic this year.
However, two beaches have not retained blue flags; Ballymoney North in Co. Wexford and Bertra in Co. Mayo. ....

Cork has enjoyed a record haul as it was announced that 93 sites across Ireland have achieved Blue Flag status for 2021.
Ten beaches and two marinas earned the prestigious Blue Flag in Cork this year, signifying a record annual haul for the Rebel County. ....

A record 93 Blue Flags have been awarded this year, an increase of two on the previous year.
The counties with the most Blue Flags are Donegal and Kerry with 14 each.
Blue Flags are given out to beaches and marinas with good water quality while Green Coast awards are for environmental protection.
This year 93 Blue Flags and 63 Green Coast awards have been presented.
Inchydoney east beach in Cork has received a Blue Flag for the first time, while Warren in Cork, Killiney in Dublin and Golden strand in Mayo regained their clean status this year. ....
