Global current account balances widened by COVID-19 pandemic: IMF
Global reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic further widened global current account balances, which would have continued to decline if not for the crisis, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Monday.
Global current account balances – the sum of absolute deficits and surpluses among all countries – increased from 2.8 percent of world gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 to 3.2 percent of GDP in 2020, according to IMF’s newly released annual External Sector Report.
“While external deficits and surpluses are not necessarily a cause for concern, excessive imbalances – larger than warranted by the economy’s fundamentals and appropriate economic policies – can have destabilizing effects on economies by fueling trade tensions and increasing the likelihood of disruptive asset price adjustments,” Martin Kaufman, assistant director in the IMF’s Strategy, Policy and Review Department, and Daniel ....

LCCI canvasses structural reforms to boost economy in 2021

he Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called for structural reforms that encompasses review of foreign exchange (forex) management and increased investment in infrastructure, warning of continued rise in inflation in 2021.
Director General, LCCI, Dr Muda Yusuf, speaking in the Chamber’s “Economic Review and Outlook for 2021”, made available to Vanguard, said inflation rate will continue its climb by 2021 as a result of rising food prices due to the disruptions in food value chain caused by insecurity, energy costs and lack of forex liquidity.
However, he believe a broad-based harmonisation of fiscal and monetary policies towards addressing the identified structural constraints will significantly help to moderate inflationary pressure in the medium term. ....
