Police on Staten Island have been given stricter guidelines in regard to searching a vehicle based only on the smell of marijuana.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Hours after a bill to legalize marijuana was passed in Albany, a memo sent to all NYPD precincts in regard to vehicle searches was celebrated by some and criticized by others.
Cops were instructed against searching trunks and/or other closed containers, such as backpacks, based only on the smell of burnt or unburnt marijuana emanating from the car. The smell of burnt marijuana could be considered probable cause of impairment, at which point officers could search the passenger compartment but not the trunk unless there’s cause to believe it contains evidence of a crime. ....
