Perhaps worse is his attack on “identity politics”, pure dogwhistling to his fellow evangelical Christians who also believe and teach that people’s worth is only found in Christ and true community only found in the church. I spent most of my adult life in these churches, and I know that Christians are encouraged to go into politics to explicitly influence and direct social policy. I am deeply disturbed that Scott Morrison truly believes he is on a mission from God.

Over the limits: the case for easing Covid restrictions

The bishops’ intervention marks one of the first times this year that there has been any high-profile lobbying against the Level 5 Covid restrictions, which have been in place since Christmas. After the horrors of January when Ireland’s daily new case rate per million was the highest in the world and when hospital admissions pushed the system towards breaking point there has been a reluctance from business and hospitality groups to question the lockdown publicly. Things have changed. Our 14-day case rate per hundred thousand (164.4) is lower than that of France (444.2) and Italy (433.0), albeit higher than Germany’s (137.4). There were 366 patients with Covid in hospital here on Thursday morning, down from a peak of 2,020 on January 18. Questions are beginning to be asked about why Ireland’s restrictions are not being eased. That pressure is intensifying now that frontline healthcare workers as well as residents and staff of nursing homes have been vaccinated.

Operation peak health: Broadcaster Clare McKenna on the one-year health and wellness programme that taught her to forget about her dress size

Are you well? That question has become so much more loaded over the past year. Staying healthy has become a daily pursuit, and it s been exhausting, hasn t it? But it hasn t been without its valuable lessons. There has been a shift in our consciousness for what is truly important - our health, our family and friends, the power of human connection, community, and the value of feeling well. For years, working as a broadcaster, I heard guests and experts talk of anxiety. I ve had worries and stresses, but I m fortunate that I could never truly identify with how they felt - until Covid-19 entered my vernacular. The magnitude of this global event weighed heavily on me in those early days. And so, the wellness tools I had dabbled in became absolute non-negotiables to keep me on an even keel.
