ORLANDO The mayor of the county that hosts Florida’s theme park mecca said Monday that “we are now in crisis mode” when it comes to dealing with soaring numbers of covid-19 infections.
Florida accounted for a fifth of the nation’s new infections last week, more than any other state, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now the home to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort is seeing about 1,000 new cases a day, said Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings. ....

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among pregnant women continues amid misinformation
ORLANDO, Fla. – Doctors with AdventHealth are urging their pregnant or soon-to-be expectant patients to get vaccinated due to a high number of severe hospitalizations from COVID-19.
The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows more than 80% of women are still unsure about getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
Doctors say pregnant women are still nervous about getting the vaccine.

AdventHealth Orlando moves to level red as COVID hospitalizations soar

The surge in new COVID cases in Florida amid the spread of the Delta variant means hospitals are scrambling to find space to care for the increasing number of seriously ill patients from the virus. AdventHealth Orlando has moved to level red when it comes to prioritizing patients.
To try to postpone, reschedule medical care that is not urgent, Dr. Victor Herrera says, to increase capacity so we can care for the increasing number of patients that we re seeing.
Dr. Herrera says this is definitely a pandemic of the unvaccinated. He says those chosing not to get a shot are putting themselves on the short end of the risk-versus-benefit ratio. ....

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said the next 24-48 hours are pivotal to the county as coronavirus cases continue to spike. Demings said the county was in “crisis mode.”
Dr. Victor Herrera with Adventhealth said a vast majority of their COVID-19 patients who were not vaccinated, several ill people have expressed regret when it was too late.
“Right before he was about to be incubated, ‘I wish I had received a vaccine,’” Herrera said the patient told him. “Now they are very sick in the hospital, they are about to be incubated, they and their families have thoughts related to if they made the right decision [about the vaccine.]” ....
