After every NHL draft, I put a summary of my thoughts and general reaction to how the New Jersey Devils performed for that day. I know full well that it takes about five years before one can truly judge a draft class as being successful or not. Some prospects grow. Some do not. Some surprise and achieve beyond any reasonable expectations. Some wither into the ether. So I would recommend taking this following opinion piece about the Devils’ 2021 Draft class with a grain of salt.
That stated, my general thesis is that the Devils did great to take Luke Hughes and proceeded to underwhelm with the remainder of their picks this year.

One of the themes of this year’s NHL Draft was how there would be a lot of variation and picks that are seemingly off the board may not end up that way in retrospect. For the sake of General Manager Tom Fitzgerald and Paul Castron, they better hope that this pick ages really well. The New Jersey Devils kept the 29th overall pick and used it to select right winger Chase Stillman of Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League.
The Sudbury Wolves did not have a 2020-21 season as the OHL did not have one. Stillman did go out on loan to a Danish under-20 league and played with Esbjerg. Per Elite Prospects, he put up nine goals and 17 points in eight games. Not exactly a lot of work, albeit productive. Stillman did make Canada’s gold-medal winning team at this year’s World U-18 Championships. He put up two goals and four points in seven games. That’s something. It is a bit hard to look at that same EP profile and note that all of the rankings

This is an honor similar to the All-Star First and Second Teams for the NHL’s players and it is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Three forwards, two defensemen, and a goaltender are selected annually for this team. This year’s All-Rookie Team consists of Smith, goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic of Carolina, defenseman K’Andre Miller of Our Hated Rivals, forward Kirill Kaprizov of Minnesota, forward Josh Norris of Ottawa, and forward Jason Robertson of Dallas. As per the press release, Smith is the sixth defenseman in Devils history to be named to the All-Rookie team. He joins Will Butcher, Colin White, Brian Rafalski, Scott Niedermayer, and Eric Weinrich in that group. That is not a bad group to be a part of. While Butcher’s career remains in progress, the other four played in this league for quite a long time.
