Habitat launches model home-building contest for students

BENNINGTON — Bennington County Habitat for Humanity has announced that it will hold a model home-building contest open to all students in Bennington County. The deadline for entries is March 1.
The competition will be divided into three different age categories, consisting of grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Students can build their model homes as a group of friends or individually. Groups are limited to no more than four students.
Winners will receive a day at Bromley Adventure Park this summer, a $100 gift certificate to the Northshire Bookstore and a takeout pizza party. The competition is sponsored by local business including TPW Real Estate, Vermont Country Store, Carpenter & Costin, HNB Inc., Manchester Discount Beverage, Maple Valley Design Build, Ramsay Gourd Architects, rk Miles, and Stewart’s Shops. ....

Alchemist Brewery praised for hiring workers with disabilities


A well-known Vermont brewery that has won many prestigious awards for its beer is now earning praise for the way it embraces workers who might have faced barriers to employment in the past.The Vermont Governor’s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities gave an award Wednesday to The Alchemist for reflecting the spirit of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The small business was praised for its outreach, training, accommodations, creative thinking around assignments for workers and other practices.“Spirit of ADA award winners are an inspiration and role model to all Vermont employers,” said Rose Lucenti, who chairs the Vermont Governor’s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities.The Alchemist, which is best known for its acclaimed double IPA Heady Topper, currently employs two workers who have intellectual disabilities, and one with physical disabilities.“It makes you have a good self esteem,” said one of those workers, Eric Greenberg ....

The Select Committee and the Vermont Legislature have a difficult task ahead. Covid-19 exacerbated and accelerated a problem that has existed in higher education for at least a decade or more. I will argue the business model for most public and private colleges and universities is broken and needs immediate change.
I had the honor of leading Green Mountain College as its president from 2016 until its closure in the summer of 2019. Prior to my leadership position at GMC, I spent five years as the president and CEO of the nonprofit Windham Foundation based in Grafton; however, most of my professional life was spent in the for-profit sector. I spent 25 years in a succession of senior leadership positions at The Vermont Country Store, ending as president and CEO. Community Health addresses 'Mental Health Crisis' with new staff, programs


Partnering With Come Alive Outside Passport to Recovery, Zero Suicide Initiatives
Vermont Business Magazine “We are in the midst of a mental health crisis,” said Community Health Behavioral Health Director Christopher Chadwick. “Not only are we dealing with mental health issues, but we are also seeing an increase in overdose deaths across the state,” Chadwick said.
Community Health is partnering with several state and local agencies to raise the importance of recognizing symptoms of potential suicide and to provide the community with the skilled professionals and resources to address behavioral health illnesses like depression, anxiety and addiction recovery.
Recent data indicates that Vermont is on pace to set record high cases of drug overdose deaths, Chadwick said. “Isolation, fear, the pandemic and the increase in stress - we are seeing a lot of that play out as an increase in self harm and death by suicide,” he added.
