VERNON PARISH, La. (KPLC) - A man accused of killing his parents has died in jail, Vernon Parish officials announced.
Robert Matthew Lombardo, 46, injured himself with a pen before dying, according to information from the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Lombardo was arrested Monday after his father Joseph Lombardo, 83, and his stepmother Rita Lombardo, 60, were found dead in their Leesville home.
Deputies went to the home after a family member said Robert Lombardo had contacted them, telling them he had beaten his parents to death. He was arrested at a camper trailer in Evans. ....

CA Legislators Introduce Bill to Fund Clean-Up of Homes Polluted by Exide


AB 1024 was introduced by Santiago along with Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Bell Gardens; Sen. Lena Gonzalez, D-Long Beach; and Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, D-Los Angeles.
The Exide plant, which opened in Vernon in 1922, operated for years despite continuing environmental violations. It allegedly released toxic chemicals including lead, arsenic and mercury into more than 10,000 properties in Bell, Boyle Heights, Commerce, Maywood, East Los Angeles, Huntington Park and Vernon, according to Santiago.
In addition to lead-contaminated soil, concerns were raised about the emission of cadmium and other toxic chemicals and the release of battery acid onto roads.
AB 1024 would fund the clean-up of 10,000 residential properties affected by the facility, Santiago said. ....

Indigenous Peoples and allies in the North Okanagan have been speaking out against the name of this year’s annual Vernon Winter Carnival, “Wild West,” calling it “anti-Indigenous” and “problematic.”
“Systemic racism in our society is evident when organizers of a 61-year-old event still think it’s OK to use problematic themes such as this one,” says Dina Brown, a Syilx woman who works, lives, and practices her culture and ceremonial traditions on her home territory in the Okanagan.  ....
