The Santa Barbara City College board of trustees gathered in-person this week to discuss expectations for the interim superintendent/president, and the recruitment process for the college’s next leader.
After more than a year of virtual gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, six members of the board sat inside the college’s MacDougall Administration Center at Thursday’s regular board meeting. ....

SBCC Superintendent/President Utpal Goswami Resigns, Effective Immediately

He resigned following a special meeting of the Board of Trustees Monday which included closed session discussion of a public employee discipline/dismissal/release.
“Under the terms of the agreement that was reached, he will continue as a consultant for the next month when requested to assist in the transition and will be paid a portion of the remaining time on his initial employment contract,” SBCC spokesman Victor Bryant said Monday night.
Kathleen Scott, a member of the College Planning Council, will serve as acting superintendent/president until the Board of Trustees appoints someone as an interim replacement, Bryant said. ....

SBCC Trustees, Faculty at Odds Over COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate for Employees, Students

Shortly after the May 27 Board of Trustees meeting, the college’s Academic Senate and the Faculty Association held a special meeting to discuss the board action and create a motion for COVID-19 vaccination requirements, among other conditions, for returning to campus. The motion required vaccines for employees working on campus, students attending in-person classes or using in-person district services, as well as the public entering the college’s facilities.
According to the motion, “this mandate will go into effect when there is at least one FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)-approved COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccines with emergency FDA approval or final approval by the World Health Organization are also allowed.” ....
