Vail's electric buses ready to make debut

Vail is embarking on a new era in its zero-emissions goals with introduction of its first-ever battery electric buses. The Vail Town Council received a preview of the operations during a behind-the-scenes tour prior to the start of the council’s April 6 virtual meeting.
The tour included a visit to the bus barn, a test ride and an overview from Fleet Manager Jeff Darnall, Public Works and Transportation Director Greg Hall, Parking and Transit Manager Mike Rose and Director of Environmental Sustainability Kristen Bertuglia.
Four battery electric buses are being added to the Vail Transit fleet, representing a major milestone in Vail’s goal to transition 100% of its 33 buses to a clean energy fleet by 2032. Two of the buses will be put into service beginning April 7 and will be used on the in-town route while mechanics evaluate their performance and maintenance requirements. ....

EAGLE Lesley D. Shelton, accused of assaulting a man on a Vail Transit bus with a knife, appeared in court Friday via a video feed from the Eagle County jail and saw his bond set at $10,000.
Shelton, 45, was reportedly riding bus 151 on March 27 when he approached the victim from behind as the victim was going to get off the bus. Shelton allegedly had an open folding knife in his hand as he approached the victim, and was at one point holding the weapon flat to the victim’s chest while yelling about the man pulling a gun on him, and later challenged the man to a fight. ....

Talk to the locals in Vail, and you ll soon hear about the noise from Interstate 70, which runs right through the heart of the luxury resort town. We dig into the archives to look at one I-70 solution that never happened: A 9-mile tunnel through Vail Mountain.
VAIL, Colo. â As long-dead plans for infrastructure go, the 53-page, single-spaced document archived on the Vail town website makes for an interesting read.
But first, a warning â this might require a little imagination.
The document, authored in 2005 by the Colorado engineering firm Kracum Resources, outlines a fascinating, if not financially feasible, vision: A 9.3-mile tunnel through the heart of Vail Mountain, redirecting Interstate 70 from its existing path through the bustling Colorado ski community. ....

Beginning Monday, maximum of 20 riders allowed on Vail Transit buses

Beginning Monday, a maximum of 20 riders will be allowed on Vail Transit buses due to statewide COVID-19 restrictions.
Officials are asking passengers and people who work in town to allow for extra time, dress warm and expect delays. Extra buses will be added during morning and evening peak hours.
In-town buses are also being rerouted from Lionshead to Golden Peak until further notice to reduce occupancy.

Face masks are required on buses as well as 6 feet of distance from others.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” a news release from the town of Vail and Vail Transit says. ....
