Four-year tax increase proposed to conserve open land in S. Burlington

A plan to raise $6 million in taxes over four years would allow South Burlington to buy and protect more open space, a conservation group says.
South Burlington Land Trust s proposal, presented to city councilors on Monday, calls for an annual tax increase of about $100 per year for owners of a median-priced condo, or about $158 for a median-priced single-family home.
The temporary tax hike would speed the city s ability to conserve rural land at a time when demand for housing has prompted more widespread development, according to a summary letter by the nonprofit land trust s president, Sarah Dopp.
Boosting SoBu s Open Space/Conservation Fund would also demonstrate a commitment to reducing the impacts of rapid climate change, she added. ....

Six-alarm fire draws nearly 40 responders

Firefighters respond to a barn fire at the Bread and Butter Farm on LeDuc Farm Road in Shelburne at around 8:30 p.m., Sunday, May 2.
Shelburne fire chief Jerry Ouimet said the barn was still standing and appeared to be salvageable when the flames were extinguished. The Shelburne department was helped by others in South Burlington, Hinesburg, Charlotte, Ferrisburgh, the University of Vermont and Shelburne police for a total of 37 rescue workers fighting to save the barn.
The fire did not appear to be suspicious, Ouimet said. According to an email news update from Bread and Butter Farm, all of its animals, and people, were able to get out safely. ....

A team of several dozen firefighters from Shelburne, South Burlington, Hinesburg, Charlotte and Ferrisburgh fought the fire over the course of a few hours, said Lee Krohn, Shelburne town manager and a member of the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department, which led the response. It was a great and rapid response, he said. It was a good save.
Once the flames were out, firefighters worked to make sure the abundant hay in the fenced enclosure around the shed was thoroughly soaked to eliminate the chance of a spark reigniting the fire, Krohn said. ....
